Now that's a good question. Is humour really necessary? In first place, the definition of necessary is something so important that you must do it or have it, unable to be changed or avoided, and I don't think humour fits in that definition, although it is very present in our lifes.
Despite the sentence I've made before, I think it is very useful. not necessary, just useful. Think about having a hard time or being the new kid in some school and you don't know anyone. In both situations it would be useful, to get over the hard time or to become more sociable. Not to mention, it has physical benefits( increases of endorphins, reduces pain or stress), cognitive benefits( increases creativity, improves problem-solving ability), emotional benefits( reduces depression, increases self-esteem), and social benefits( increases friendliness and attractiviness)...
In brief words, it is helpful and useful, not necessary.
